Rail-Mounted Gantry Crane Market Analysis
The rail-mounted gantry crane market generated revenue of USD 392.8 million in 2023, and it is expected to witness a CAGR of 3.4% during 2024–2030, to reach USD 491.6 million by 2030. This growth is driven by the growing maritime trade activity worldwide, which, in turn, increases the investment in cargo loading and unloading machinery across developing countries.
The increasing demand for these cranes is also due to the rise in containerization, which drives their usage at ports, large warehouses, and inland container terminals. These machines offer heavy material lifting alternatives, as well as reduce maritime material transportation time. Compared to other kinds of cranes, the rail-mounted design offers more stability and lifting capability. These machines can stack containers neatly in a row, as well as enabling the effective use of the available space and making it simple to retrieve containers when needed.
Currently, several product variations are available, such as single- and double-girder designs. During the forecast duration, the key restraints for the growth of the global market might include high investment costs. With the growth in trade and advancements in technologies, the market for rail-mounted gantry cranes is progressing rapidly in the developing countries in Asia and the Middle East. This is because these machines offer higher efficiency, which is vital for expanding port and logistics capacities.
Rail Mounted Gantry Crane Market Trends & Drivers
Increasing E-commerce Industry Is Foremost Trend
One of the main trends in the market is the expanding e-commerce and logistics activities around the world. RMG cranes are widely used for relocating and stacking shipping containers and handling large, heavy sacks of bulk goods.
RMG cranes help in efficiently handling and organizing large quantities of goods, helping reduce the congestion in the storage yard. As more goods pass through ports to satisfy e-commerce needs, such establishment must upgrade their machinery to handle higher volumes of goods at lower costs and emissions.
Because of their increased productivity from quicker operation, simplicity of mobility, flexible structure, and the capacity to handle big sizes and weights, the demand for these machines continues to surge globally.
Additional factors involved are urbanization, increasing industrial activities, modernization of the existing infrastructure, and the growing need for safe and effective bulk-handling equipment.
Aside from this, the market is growing due to technological advancements, such as the automation and digitalization of rail-mounted gantry cranes. These developments reduce the requirement for human interaction and allow the cranes to be programmed to load and unload goods autonomously, thus increasing accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
The market is expanding because of the integration of smart features, including container positioning systems, remote operation, and non-contact collision systems. Moreover, RMG cranes are gaining popularity because of their environment-friendly nature; they help reduce emissions and pollution.
Consumers’ increasing purchasing power, need for autonomous RMG cranes for bulk cargo handling, implementation of various government pollution control regulations, and extensive research and development (R&D) efforts aimed at producing technologically advanced cranes, propel the market.
Increasing Demand from Construction Industry
Due to the expansion of the construction and infrastructure sector, the role of gantry cranes also increases. During construction, the lifting and moving of large, heavy objects, such as steel beams, concrete blocks, and precast elements, are frequently done by gantry cranes.
With the worldwide rise in the rates of industrialization and urbanization, the requirement for efficient material handling equipment at construction sites increases simultaneously, to ensure the timely completion of projects and to improve productivity. In particular, these machines are deployed while building roads, ports, bridges, trains, and skyscrapers.
With the help offered by gantry cranes in construction-related tasks with lifting power, adaptability, and mobility, infrastructure companies can reduce the laborious work and boost the efficiency of operations, by transporting large and bulky materials safely and accurately.
In worldwide trade, shipping, transportation, supply chain management, and logistics industries play a prominent role in propelling the market. At ports and container terminals, gantry cranes are essential for transferring cargo containers from ships to trucks or trains and vice versa.
With the growth of international trade via sea routes all around the world and the increase in the volume of container ships, there is also a rise in the demand for big and more-efficient gantry cranes that are capable of handling heavy containers with speed and precision. These machines are commonly used to load and unload from ships, trucks, and trains, which guarantees efficient operations and reduces turnaround times.
Rising Demands for Compliance with Safety Regulations
Gantry cranes are used in various industrial sectors, including manufacturing, ports, transportation, and construction areas, where safety is the top priority. To guarantee the safe operation of these machines and prevent accidents or injuries, governments and other agencies have implemented strict safety laws and compliance criteria.
Following safety measures and standards can create some challenges for the manufacturers, suppliers, and end users in the industry. Some specific safety measures, such as load capacity limitations, structural stability, electrical safety, and operator training requirements, must be followed during the design, production, installation, and operation of gantry cranes.
Rail-Mounted Gantry Crane Industry Outlook
Lift Capacity Insights
The above 40 tons bifurcation holds the larger share in the market. This is because these variants offer cost-effective operations, especially when lifting heavy loads. With more goods needing to be moved in quick time, ports and logistics terminals are installing RMG cranes that can lift over 40 tons at once.
During the study, we analyzed the following capacities:
0–40 Tons
Above 40 Tons (Larger and Faster Category)
Application Insights
Based on application, the railways category is the largest in the market. This could be because of the huge expanses on railway classification yards, where thousands of containers are stacked upon each other. Moreover, to save time and fuel, freight companies run over 5,000-foot-long freight trains in the U.S. on average. Further, wherever the loading gauge permits, double-stack container trains are run with flat wagons or well cars.
During the forecast period, the RMG cranes are estimated to account for a significant market share as they can handle all main lifting tasks and their versatility in loading and unloading operations. However, the wharf segment is anticipated to see rapid market growth over the forecast period in the application category. The extra height of containers highlights the utility of RMG cranes at railyards and intermodal logistics terminals.
During the study, we analyzed the following applications:
Wharf (Fastest-Growing Category)
Railway (Largest Category)
Others
Type Insights
The cantilever bifurcation holds the larger share of the market.
One of the primary benefits of cantilever gantry cranes is their span. Due to their unique design, these cranes can reach farther and cover a greater area than ordinary cranes. Because of this, they are ideal for outdoor storage areas and large warehouses with ample space. Due to the cantilever arm, their range and accessibility increase, which helps them extend beyond the support structure.
During the study, we analyzed the following types:
Cantilever (Larger and Faster-Growing Category)
Non-Cantilever
By Technology
Based on technology, the manual bifurcation has the larger share. For decades, gantry cranes have been operated by humans to shift containers and other forms of cargo between ships, trains, and trucks.
The autonomous bifurcation is expected to witness the higher CAGR, of 3.7%, over the forecast period. Although a higher initial investment, autonomous RMG cranes offer long-term cost advantages as they reduce the requirement for human operators, who need to be paid monthly salaries, insurance, and paid leaves. Further, compared to manually operated machines, autonomous ones are safer as they eliminate human error, thus also enabling regulatory compliance.
During the study, we analyzed the following technology used:
Manual (Larger Technology Market)
Autonomous (Faster Growing Technology Market)
