The global pressure washer market generated revenue of $2,629.1 million in 2021, and it is expected to reach $3,868.9 million by 2030 progressing with a CAGR of 4.4% during 2021–2030. This is attributed to the increasing demand for pressure washers in residential and commercial applications and the rising number of carwash stations.
The increase in the urbanization rate will raise the demand for new residential buildings, thereby leading to the increasing need for home cleaning systems, including pressure washers. In 2019, about 55% of the world’s population lived in urban areas, and this percentage is expected to reach 68% by 2050. Around 90% of the increase in the urbanization rate will be concentrated in Asia and Africa, according to the UN. The global urban population grew to 4.20 billion in 2018 from 0.75 billion in 1950. By 2050, India alone will add 416 million urban dwellers. China and Nigeria will further add 255 million and 189 million urban dwellers, respectively, by 2050. These three countries will account for 35% of the projected growth of the world’s urban population between 2018 and 2050.
Owing to COVID-19, the future of the cleaning industry is expected to witness dramatic changes. Until a few months ago, several companies had never realized the importance of deep cleaning in keeping the spread of infectious diseases at bay. The situation today is entirely different, as the commercial cleaning industry has stepped up to fill the gaps in the demand–supply chain. Sustainability, innovation, and standard practices became the new norm in 2020, which has fueled the demand for pressure washers in the contract cleaning sector. Hygiene and new safety protocols, which demanded the usage of professional cleaning equipment, became a key area of focus in commercial spaces.
Pressure washers are available in a wide range of stores, ranging from consumer stores, such as Home Depot and Lowe’s; to industrial suppliers to specialty stores. The primary difference between the pressure washer brands is the quality of the product. A typical consumer unit generally has a life of 100 hours, with 20 hours of annual usage. An industrial or commercial unit, on the other hand, has a life of several thousand hours.
Thus, consumer units are generally preferred for short-duration cleaning jobs, such as removing loose mud, paint, grime, mold, dirt, and dust from surfaces and cleaning objects such as vehicles, building exteriors, and concrete surfaces. These machines are highly affordable, user-friendly, compact, and can be carried easily, thus resulting in increasing adoption among consumers. According to a survey carried out in the U.S., professional cleaning service providers revealed that approximately 20–25% of the product portfolios comprise consumer cleaning equipment. Moreover, over 2 million households in the U.K. avail professional cleaning services every year.

The commercial category held the largest pressure washer market share, around 40%, in 2021, because of the growing awareness of cleanliness among owners of commercial spaces. These devices are used in several commercial settings, including retail stores and hospitals; and public places, such as roads, sidewalks, and monuments.
Additionally, several startups providing professional cleaning services have emerged in recent years, such as Urban Company. With the rise in the disposable income and standard of living of people, the preference for such services is growing, for effective car cleaning, patio cleaning, and home exterior cleaning.
Moreover, government and private investments continue to boost the worldwide construction sector. Pressure washers are used for cleaning construction sites, as the extensive accumulation of dirt and various construction material on machinery necessitates powerful and specialized tools for cleaning. Thus, leading competitors in the industry are continually investing in new technologies, such as battery-operated pressure washers, which are more cost-effective and facilitate deep cleaning.
For instance, the Madison Yards construction project, which began in September 2021, involves the redevelopment of 21 acres at the southwest corner of University Avenue and Segoe Road. The project will entail the development of around 400 residential units, 400,000 square feet of medical/office space, a 50,000-square-feet Whole Foods Market outlet, and a variety of other retail, restaurant, entertainment spaces. During construction and for maintenance, such projects require deep cleaning, for which pressure washers have become popular in recent years.
Globally, APAC countries will experience the fastest growth, around 5%, in the pressure washer market, majorly due to the government initiatives for developing infrastructure. For instance, in February 2020, the Chinese government announced plans to invest $1.4 trillion for developing digital infrastructure, inter-city transportation systems including railway systems), and 5G networks.
Similarly, the demand for vehicle washing, floor cleaning, gardening, and swimming pool maintenance services is increasing with the rise in the disposable income of people around the world. As per the OICA, around 82 million automobiles were sold globally in 2021, thereby driving the demand for carwash services.
Moreover, with the growing number of households in countries such as India, China, and Indonesia, the usage of pressure washers for gardening and car cleaning is booming.
Sales of hot-Water pressure washers are projected to rise faster, with over 4% CAGR, based on operation, during the forecast period. The use of hot-water pressure washers can reduce the cleaning duration by 35% and provide a more-effective cleaning. This is driving their demand for deep cleaning applications, as they are better able to clean oil, grease, and various other substances that cannot be removed from surfaces with traditional methods.
For instance, the Daimer’s Super Max range of hot-water pressure washers offer temperatures of up to 300 °F (572 °C), pressures of up to 3,500 psi, and flow rates of up to 10 gallons per minute. These electric pressure washers are ideal for cleaning and maintaining food processors and other F&B machinery. Cleaning failures in food processing and packaging plants frequently result in the spread of infections, which can often be fatal.
The 1,501–3,000 PSI category held the largest share in 2021, more than 50%, because of the increasing usage of these variants for washing automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles and for residential purposes, including cleaning and gardening.
Across the globe, car washing is a key end use of pressure washers, generating around 10% of the revenue in 2020. The monumental growth in the demand for carwash services will likely augment the sale of pressure washers. Between 1996 and 2014, the number of consumers using carwash services increased by 19.20%. Since 2018, the car washing industry has been growing at an annual rate of more than 3%. By the end of 2022, the number of carwash centers is expected to increase by 10%.
Variants that offer a pressure of 3,001-4,000 psi recorded the second-largest share in 2021. The demand for these products is driven by their suitability for heavy-duty applications in construction sites, automobiles, and other spaces.
Key players operating in the pressure washer market have been actively engaged in product launches and facility expansions in order to strengthen their presence. For instance:
