The global automotive human–machine interface (HMI) market size was $18,822.3 million in 2019, which is projected to reach $55,318.4 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 10.8% during the forecast period (2020–2030). The growth of the market is aided by the rapid digitization in automobiles, coupled with the advancements in the augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), connectivity, and internet of things (IoT) technologies and their incorporation in HMI solutions. In addition, the increasing sale of premium cars in major automobile markets, due to the rising disposable income and growing trend of connected and autonomous vehicles, is expected to drive the automotive HMI market during the forecast period.
COVID-19’s rapid spread has had a significant impact on the global automotive industry, and thus, the automotive human–machine interface (HMI) market. The pandemic has forced many players in the market to halt their operations. This pause in operations is directly impacting the revenue flow of the automotive HMI market players. The COVID-19 outbreak is expected to accelerate the consolidation and transformation in the market, especially in countries where it is more fragmented, such as China and India.
On the basis of product, the central display category held the largest revenue share in the automotive HMI market in 2019. This can be attributed to the fact that a considerable number of passenger cars in major markets are now equipped with smart and connected central displays. The government regulations on prohibition of in-car mobile phone usage and integration of these displays with telematics systems are expected to drive the category’s growth during the forecast period.
On the basis of interface, the automotive HMI market is expected to witness faster growth in the visual interface bifurcation, crossing 96 million units by 2030. This is attributed to the increasing demand for convenient features and adaptive solutions, along with the rising focus of carmakers on reducing the distractions, by providing visual interfaces, such as instrument clusters and touch-screen displays.
Based on end-use, the automotive HMI market has been categorized into mid-priced cars, premium cars, and economic cars. Among these, the mid-priced cars category accounted for the majority volume share in the market in 2019. Asia-Pacific (APAC) is the largest market for passenger cars, and the rising demand for an enhanced user experience and safety features and growing customer preference for automotive HMI features in these vehicles are benefitting the growth of this category.
Globally, APAC was the largest market for automotive HMIs in 2019, in terms of value. This can chiefly be attributed to the higher sales of passenger cars in APAC compared to other regions. With the growing purchasing power of the consumers in the region, it is predicted that the demand for HMI-equipped vehicles will see a considerable increase in the near future. Moreover, the automotive market in China is witnessing significant growth in the sales and demand for premium vehicles. The burgeoning sale of premium vehicles in the region is further fueling the growth of automotive HMI market.
Players operating in the automotive human–machine interface (HMI) market are increasingly investing in the improvement of automotive HMI systems, to deliver higher consumer convenience. Some of the major trends being observed in the global market include the advent of innovative display technologies that are highly dynamic and adaptable and improved dashboard layout flexibilities.
The growing preference of people to stay connected with the outer world, while traveling, is leading to the increasing in-vehicle connectivity feature integration. Responding to the customer preferences, automotive manufacturers are increasingly integrating in-vehicle connectivity features in infotainment systems, through partnerships with IT or consumer electronics vendors. These include smartphone connectivity with the vehicle, roadside assistance, traffic and collision warnings, automobile diagnostics, and real-time traffic monitoring. The increasing preference for connected features in vehicles is expected to drive the automotive HMI market during the forecast period.
Several factors associated with human driving habits, such as the failure to pay attention, inappropriate speed, and unsafe distance from the vehicle moving in front, are majorly responsible for road accidents. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), every year, over 1.35 million people die due to road traffic crashes, making this the eighth major cause of death. Governments around the world are implementing mandatory policies to incorporate safety features in vehicles. Automotive HMI solutions offer a variety of safety features, such as voice interactions, touch screens, and mobile devices that help drivers notice and understand important information, thereby reducing the distractions while driving. Thus, the integration of safety features is driving the automotive HMI market.

With the rising focus on energy conservation, growing environmental concerns, and increasing fossil fuel prices, the demand for electric vehicles is expected to increase significantly in the medium term. The battery being the major power source, plug-in vehicles, which include battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), are more likely to be equipped with automotive HMIs, such as rear-seat entertainment units, heads-up display, and advanced infotainment systems for drivers. Thus, the growing demand for electric vehicles will boost the automotive HMI market during the forecast period.
In recent years, the major players in the automotive HMI market have taken several strategic measures, such as mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships, to gain a competitive edge.
In December 2019, DENSO CORPORATION announced that it has taken an equity stake in PiNTeam Holding GmbH, which is involved in the deployment of in-vehicle embedded software in Europe, in order to accelerate the development of the basic software that controls in-vehicle electronic control units (ECUs).
Additionally, in July 2019, DENSO CORPORATION and Toyota Motor Corporation announced the formation of a joint venture for the research and development of next-generation in-vehicle semiconductors. The two companies studied the details and aimed to establish the new company in April 2020. Advanced research will be conducted on the basic structure and processing methods of next-generation semiconductors, to develop electronic components, such as power modules for electric vehicles and periphery monitoring sensors for automated vehicles, by integrating semiconductors.
The research offers size of the global automotive HMI market for the period 2014–2030.
