U.S. Air Duct Industry Trends
Technological Advancement in Ductwork System Is Major Trend
The integration of smart ducts with IoT connectivity and automated controls and the use of advanced materials for their manufacturing are the key market trends.
These ducts are equipped with sensors and actuators, which are helpful in monitoring airflow, temperature, humidity, and air quality. With such automated control systems integrated to the ducting, the overall HVAC system becomes more advanced and smarter. Such sensors in the ducting also collect data to enable the predictive maintenance of the system, which helps reduce downtime, energy consumption, and discomfort.
Advanced materials are also being used in the piping for better insulation and leakage protection. The usage of polymers can help reduce thermal loss, thereby improving the energy efficiency of the overall HVAC system. For instance, in October 2024, Lindab and Tata Steel partnered for Tata Steel to supply Zeremis green steel to the former for making HVAC ducts.
Increasing Construction Activities Drive Growth of Market
The increasing construction activities due to the economic and population growth drives the sale of advanced heating and cooling systems and, in turn, ducts. This growth in residential and commercial construction activities is also attributed to the ongoing urbanization in the U.S., with 83% of the nation’s population living in cities. New housing developments in the country, especially in urban and suburban areas, drive the demand for HVAC systems, which require extensive ductwork.
Furthermore, the development of the industrial infrastructure, such as new manufacturing factories, power plants, and warehouses, creates a high demand for efficient HVAC systems with advanced ductwork for efficient air distribution, ventilation, and temperature.
In January 2023, Cumulus Data completed the construction of Phase 1 of its flagship 475-Megawatt zero-carbon Susquehanna data center campus. The HVAC systems here are integrated with advanced ductwork to maintain humidity and temperature.
Competition from Alternative HVAC technologies Is Key Market Challenge
The rise in the adoption of ductless systems is the key challenge for the market as ductless mini-split AC systems eliminate the need for extensive ducting. Mini-split ACs comprise an outdoor compressor and indoor air handling units, offering ease of installation and lower energy losses. Ductless ACs also offer quietness, better air quality, zoning capability, and low installation costs. Window ACs are widely popular in the country, especially in the residential sector, where central systems with extensive piping are expensive and not feasible.
