Apheresis Market Overview
Apheresis is the process by which the cellular and soluble components of the blood can be separated by using a machine. This procedure is primarily performed on blood donors wherein, the whole blood is centrifuged to obtain erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets, which are used for blood transfusions in different patients. Apheresis can be used in patients with blood cancer or a range of other hematological disorders.
The apheresis market on the basis of process type is categorized into the plasmapheresis, leukapheresis, granulocytapheresis, lymphocytapheresis, lymphoplasmapheresis and thermocytapheresis. Among these, the thermocytapheresis and lymphoplasmapheresis categories are expected to dominate the market throughout the forecast period. This can be mainly because of the high prevalence of blood disorders, across the globe.
The apheresis market in terms of product type is classified into rotary peristaltic pumps, filters, centrifuges, and optical sensors. The rotary peristaltic pumps category is expected to witness fastest growth, during the forecast period, owing to the presence of big market players and increasing investments by public and private organizations.
Hospitals & clinics, diagnostic centers, ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs), and others are some of the end users of apheresis systems. The largest share is projected to be held by hospitals, owing to the huge number of patients suffering from kidney failure, liver failure, thrombocytosis, cancer and other disorders. This, in turn, is encouraging patients to seek proper care and treatment in the hospitals equipped with technologically advanced products.
Globally, North America held the largest market share in the global apheresis market. The market in the region is driven by rising cases of cancer, heart disease, and renal & liver failure. For instance, according to the study published by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2018, due to sedentary lifestyle, every year more than 647,000 people die in the U.S. However, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is expected to witness fastest growth during the forecast period. This can be mainly attributed to the growing health concerns, technological advancements, and low labor cost.
Apheresis Market Dynamics
According to World Health Organization (WHO), in 2015, 1.2 million people died due to kidney failure. Increase in the number of health-related issues, such as heart diseases, kidney and liver failure and cancer; adoption of technologically advanced products; and rising number of transplantations have increased the demand for apheresis. Hereby, all these factors are driving the apheresis market.
Lack of awareness of the treatments done with the perfusion systems and the post-health issues, such as graft rejection, regenerative diseases, and metastasis, cause hindrance in the growth of apheresis market.
Apheresis Market Competitive Landscape
The key market players are actively participating in the acquisitions and product launches or approvals to gain significant share in the apheresis market. For instance, in October 2019, Terumo BCT, a subsidiary of Terumo Corporation, launched the latest cell therapy technology, the Finia Fill and Finish System, which is developed to help bring reproducibility and control to cell therapy manufacturing.
In addition, in April 2017, Terumo BCT announced that the Spectra Optia apheresis system with therapeutic plasma exchange has received CE marking with an indication to treat Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and myasthenia gravis (MG).
Some of the major players in the global apheresis market are Medica S.p.A., Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., B. Braun Melsungen AG, Haemonetics Corporation, Nikkiso Co. Ltd., Asahi Kasei Medical Co. Ltd., and Terumo Corporation.
The major countries taken into consideration for market size analysis include the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, the U.K., Italy, Spain, Russia, the Netherlands, Japan, China, India, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E., and South Africa.
